Custom Metric Builder

PayHelm's Custom Metric Builder lets you create any KPI your business needs by combining existing metrics — revenue, orders, ad spend, sessions, cost of goods, and more — into calculated fields you can use across dashboards, reports, and AI tasks.

What is the Custom Metric Builder?

Standard analytics tools give you a fixed list of metrics. PayHelm's Custom Metric Builder lets you go further by defining your own:

  • Blended ROAS — total revenue ÷ total ad spend across all channels
  • Net Revenue per Order — (revenue − cost of goods − refunds) ÷ orders
  • Contribution Margin — revenue − ad spend − shipping − COGS
  • Email Revenue Share — Klaviyo-attributed revenue ÷ total store revenue × 100
  • Any formula your business uses internally

If you can express it as a formula, you can build it in PayHelm.

How to Create a Custom Metric

  1. Go to Reports → Custom Metrics in the left navigation.
  2. Click + New Metric.
  3. Give your metric a name and optional description.
  4. Use the formula builder to combine base metrics with math operators:
  • Available operators: + × ÷ ( )
  • All base metrics are searchable by name (e.g. "ad spend", "orders", "sessions")
  1. Set the format — currency, percentage, number, or decimal.
  2. Click Save. Your custom metric is immediately available everywhere in PayHelm.

Using Custom Metrics in Reports

Once saved, your custom metrics appear alongside built-in metrics in:

  • Dashboard widgets — add any custom metric to a chart or KPI tile
  • Custom Reports — use as a column, row grouping, or chart series
  • AI Agent tasks — reference your metric by name in a prompt (e.g. "Show me blended ROAS by week for the last 90 days")
  • Scheduled Reports — include in automated email or Slack reports

Example: Building a Blended ROAS Metric

Step What to do
Name Blended ROAS
Formula Total Revenue ÷ Total Ad Spend
Format Decimal (e.g. 3.2×)

Once saved, you can add it to any dashboard tile or report column to see your blended return across Google Ads, Meta, TikTok, and any other connected ad platforms — all in one number.

Example: Building a Contribution Margin Metric

Step What to do
Name Contribution Margin
Formula Revenue − Ad Spend − Shipping Cost − Cost of Goods
Format Currency

This gives you a single metric showing true profitability after all variable costs — something standard analytics tools don't surface on their own.

Tips

  • Start simple — build the metric first, then add complexity if needed.
  • Use parentheses when the order of operations matters: (Revenue − Refunds) ÷ Orders vs. Revenue − (Refunds ÷ Orders) give very different results.
  • Name it clearly — other team members and the AI Agent will reference it by name, so descriptive names like "Net Margin %" work better than abbreviations.
  • Percentage metrics — divide first, then use the Percentage format. PayHelm multiplies by 100 automatically when displaying percentages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use custom metrics in AI Agent prompts?
Yes. Just mention the metric by name in your prompt. The AI Agent knows about all your saved custom metrics and will use them when building reports or answering questions.

Can I share custom metrics with my team?
Yes. All custom metrics are account-wide — anyone on your team with report access can see and use them.

Can I edit or delete a custom metric?
Yes. Go to Reports → Custom Metrics, click the metric name, and choose Edit or Delete. Deleting a metric removes it from any report or dashboard that uses it.

What base metrics are available?
PayHelm includes 300+ base metrics covering orders, revenue, refunds, ad spend, sessions, ROAS, cost of goods, shipping, customer lifetime value, and more — across every connected platform.

If you have questions about building a specific metric, contact our support team or ask the AI Agent: "Help me build a custom metric for [your formula]."
